On June 20th, 2018, at approximately 11:00 am, McClain & Co., Inc.’s Underbridge Inspection Vehicle was performing work on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge near Alexandria, Virginia. A tractor-trailer traveling east in the express lanes of I-495’s Outer Loop lost control and struck a Truck Mounted Attenuator owned by DBI. The TMA was protecting the bridge inspection crew and McClain’s Underbridge Inspection Vehicle.  The accident resulted in a fiery crash and the complete closure of the Capital Beltway in both directions. Upon impact the tractor-trailer and McClain’s Underbridge Vehicle immediately caught fire. A second fire started when another worker's truck parked near the crash scene ignited.

Personnel affected in this unfortunate incident were McClain’s Underbridge Truck Operator and our Inspection Bucket Operator along with the two bridge inspectors.  The bridge inspectors and our bucket operator were working under the bridge at the time of the accident. The bucket operator and the two bridge inspectors were wearing their safety harnesses, which restrained them at the time of the collision.  Under the guidance and supervision of the first responders, the three individuals in the bucket were lowered to a fire boat and rescued successfully. All of them were evaluated, treated and released from medical care.

We are extremely grateful that most of the people working on the bridge were able to go home to their families and hope the driver of the TMA makes a full and quick recovery. We are also thankful for the quick and professional action of all of the first responders. Sadly, the driver of the tractor-trailer lost his life in the accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
